Designing Your Dream Shower

with KOHLER Design Consultant Keith Rothstein

Choreograph by Kohler

What can someone expect from a design consultation?
We encourage people to come in at any point in the process. So, even if you’re just beginning to think about a new shower, come in. We can show you what’s possible. I like to start by going over your wish list – what’s the dream? How do you want to feel in the shower? How do you want it to look? We can take you from inspiration through floor plan considerations to choosing products.

What shower experiences should people be thinking about?
Technology has opened the door to a whole new world of experiences in the shower. Often people don’t realize that it’s possible to have not only water but also music, steam and lighting all working together in the shower. It’s really like having a spa treatment at home.

And spray innovations have introduced such a wide range of water delivery options that people can choose how they want to feel – energized or relaxed – and design experiences to achieve those sensations. I help clients find the best fit.

How do you help people choose a style?
We talk about their style preferences in other areas to help us zero in on a general area of modern or traditional. From there, we look at the products themselves so clients can touch and see the different details up close. I go into color palette preferences as well, so we can choose finishes that makes sense in the overall space.

Are there any shower products you recommend right now?
For anyone who wants the beauty of tile or stone without the cost and difficulty, I highly recommend Choreograph® shower walls. People love the way it looks, being able to customize storage, and not having to deal with grout.

Keith Rothstein is a KOHLER® Signature Store Senior Project Consultant in Edina, Minnesota. His design background includes over 15 years in plumbing and tile expertise.

How to Clean Your Countertops

We've compiled the manufacturer recommend ways on how to clean your countertops. Check out this guide to keep them looking great!

General Care for all countertops

Overall most manufacturers recommend cleaning your countertop with a mild detergent and using nonabrasive scrubbing tools to remove dirt and grime. Some harsh chemicals can cause permanent discoloration or damage to your surfaces. Popular cleaning supplies include Windex, Soft Scrub and Scotch-Brite non-scratch products. The below care guide is categorized by manufacturer. If your countertop is made by a different manufacturer, always refer to their care and guide instructions.

Cambria

Maintaining Cambria is easy. Simply wash with a soft cotton cloth and warm water, and mild soap if desired.

DO NOT expose, in use or otherwise, Cambria to abrasive or strong alkaline or acid or free radicals or oxidizers or the like (whether high, neutral or low pH) cleaners. Various chemicals are corrosive and/or erosive in their ability to attack any structure including Cambria. Be very aware of these potential damages to your surface.

Cambria IS NOT heat proof, chemical proof or fracture proof in any form. Be aware of damaging exposure to these potential damaging acts upon your Cambria.

DO NOT use or expose Cambria to such products including, but not limited to bleach, oven cleaners, Comet®, Soft Scrub®, SOS®, products with pumice, batteries, paint removers, furniture strippers, tarnish or silver cleaners, or the like. DO NOT use abrasive or harsh scrub pads. DO NOT apply any sealers, penetrants or topical treatments to Cambria under any circumstances. Such products will wear off and cause the gloss to appear dull or inconsistent.

Continue reading on Cambria's Customer Care Page and check out their Approved Cleaners statement.

Silestone

For Silestone Quartz with a polished finish, we recommend you use a mild household cleaner, such as 409®, Fantastik®, Lysol®, or Windex®. In case of stubborn spills or stains, soak the area for up to 10 minutes with one of the above cleaners and vigorously wipe away with a non scratch Scotch Brite® pad.

The natural quartz in Silestone makes it the toughest interior surface available on the market. It resists scratching, staining and scorching better than any other natural stone or solid surface. Do avoid excessive force or pressure because that may mar or chip the surface. Don't worry about spills from coffee, wine, lemon juice, olive oil, vinegar, makeup, and many other common household products; just avoid harsh chemicals. And don't worry about dropping a lit match onto your Silestone countertop; it won't scorch. But, use trivets when placing any hot items to avoid thermal shock.

Continue reading on Silestone's Care Page and check out their Care & Maintenance guide.

Caesarstone

Its hard, nonporous surface makes Caesarstone simple to clean. In most cases, soap and water or a mild detergent is all that is required to maintain its luster. If necessary, apply common, non-abrasive, household cleaners such as Soft Scrub Liquid Gel with Bleach directly on a damp cloth or sponge and wipe the surface, rinsing thoroughly after cleaning. To remove adhered material such as food, gum, or nail polish, first scrape away the excess material with a plastic putty knife and then clean the surface with a damp cloth to remove any marks left behind and any residual dirt.

Please understand that Honed, Concrete and Motivo™ finishes will require more daily maintenance than our polished finishes. Since there is more exposed surface area with these finishes, metal marks, fingerprints and other signs of daily living will show on these materials. Most of these marks can be easily removed with little effort and cleaning products such as Soft Scrub® Liquid Gel with Bleach. Squeeze a small amount on a soft damp cloth and wipe the surface, then rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove residue.

Continue reading on Ceasarstone's Care & Maintenance page or check out their Countertop Care document.

Wilsonart-Laminate

To clean the surface, use a damp cloth or sponge and a mild soap or detergent. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and wipe dry. Difficult stains such as coffee or tea can be removed using a mild household cleaner/detergent and a soft bristled brush, repeating as necessary. If a stain persists, use a paste of baking soda and water and apply with a soft bristled brush. Light scrubbing for 10 to 20 strokes should remove most stains. Although baking soda is a low abrasive, excessive scrubbing or exerting too much force could damage the decorative surface, especially if it has a gloss finish.

Stubborn stains that resist any of the above cleaning methods may require the use of undiluted household bleach or nail polish remover. Apply the bleach or nail polish remover to the stain and let stand no longer than two minutes. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and wipe dry. This step may be repeated if the stain appears to be going away and the color of the laminate has not been affected. WARNING: Prolonged exposure of the laminate surface to bleach will cause discoloration.

How to Incorporate Color to Your Space

Have you been looking to refresh and reenergize your room with new colors? If you are like most homeowners, deciding on the perfect color is not always an easy task. Use the following tips and tricks to help you maintain balance and harmony in your space.

Use the 60-30-10 rule

Take a look at some rooms in magazines or in Designers' Portfolio. You'll notice that the rooms you like the most are almost invariably divided into percentages of 60-30-10. Why this works is anybody's guess. Perhaps it is the human tendency to see an overall theme in the 60 percent hue, unifying the coloration. The 30 percent provides visual interest and the 10 percent, not unlike jewelry, provides that little spark of sparkle.

So, when decorating a particular room, divide the colors into percentages:

  • 60% of a dominant color
  • 30% of a secondary color
  • 10% of an accent color

When you think about it, this color breakdown is similar to a man's business suit:

  • 60% of the outfit's color is the slacks and jacket
  • 30% of the outfit's color is the shirt
  • 10% of the outfit's color is the tie

Translated to a room setting, it typically means:

  • 60% of the room's color is the walls
  • 30% of the room's color is the upholstery
  • 10% of the room's color is, say, an accent piece or a floral arrangement

Use the family of your favorite color

Use a monochromatic theme of lights and darks from a color family. Using the 60-30-10 rule above, pick three colors from the family and use this throughout your space. Use the Paint colors by Family guide from Sherwin Williams to help you out.

Add color to your space by accessorizing

Small touches of color can really stand out in a neutral space. This can be done over an extended period of time to get your desired look or you can update seasonally to keep your space looking new all year round. The following are a few accessories that are easy to incorporate into a space.

Start with a rug as your centerpiece and pull from its colors. A rug can be used in kitchens, baths, living rooms and just about any other space in your home. Use the colors from the rug and expand upon it in your space.

Use your favorite art as a starting point. It could be a painting, sculpture or a piece of furniture that you enjoy. The art does not have to be expensive or made by a famous artist. Just as long as you love it you can take color inspiration from it and incorporate it into your space.

Add pops of color here and there using pillows, blankets, towels, colored organizers, fruits, vegetables, floral or just about anything that you would be using in your space. You can use the paint color family guide above by Sherwin Williams to have a variety but harmonious color accents in your space.

Incorporate color with your fixtures, cabinetry and appliances

Today, the sky is almost the limit with what you can purchase for a kitchen or bath remodel. There are so many varieties of finishes, colors and textures in products that you can use to create your custom style. You could create a more neutral space and incorporate bold accent colors or you could go for subtle monotones and use natural elements to make the space pop such as copper or brass finishes, natural stone tile or colored glass.

Your Gerhard’s design team is the expert in this area and we can be there every step of the way with you to help you decide what would make your perfect space. We make it our mission to deliver personalized service and high quality products to you, our valued customer!
